THREE MILE ISLAND NUCLEAR STATION STATION HEALTH PHYSICS PROCEDURE #1611 AREA AND EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION 1.0 PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to describe how to remove radioactive contamination from the surface of an area, and (or) any involved equipment.
2.0 DISCUSSION Removal of contaminants is accomplished by physical or chemical means.
Every effort must be made to prevent the spreading of contaminaticn during the removal process.
Contaminated areas are areas with loose surface contamination above the following limits:

5.0 PROCEDURE NOTE:
A Radiation Work Permit is required prior to entering areas with contamination levels above the limits set forth in Section 2.10 of the Radiation Prote'ction Manual 193 113 1.0 2

clothing must be worn as required by the Radiation Work Permit.
5.1 Area Decontamination 5.1.1 The enclosed chart describes decontamination agents and techniques to be used on various surfaces. The exact techniques to be used will depend on the individual circumstance. The Radiation Protection Supervisor Foreman should be contacted if further guidance is necessary.
5.1.2 Contaminated areas should be cleaned by working from the outer edges toward the center, or the top to the bottom.
5.1.3 Care must be exercised to prevent tracking of contamination to other areas.
5.2 Eouipment Decontamination 5.2.1 The enclosed chart describes decontamination agents and techniques to be used on various materials.
Whenever possible, contaminated equipment should be immersed in the decontaminating agent.
The Radiation Protection Supervisor Foreman should be contacted if further guidance is necessary.
5.2.2 For small items, the Ultrasonic Sink is available for decontamination. Other items of reasonable size should be decontaminated in the Decon Room.
For extremely large items, the decontamination pit, located in the Fuel Handling Building can be utilized.

1611 Revision 4 01/21/76 5.3 Af ter decontamination, smear surveys must be taken to verify that the area or equipment is in fact decontaminated.
Record results on the smear survey record (Form 1609-1, attached) which is located in the Health Physics Lab, as per HPP 1609.
NOTE:
If results show that the area or equipment is still contaminated, the decontamination process must be repeated.
5.3.1 All equipment, having been decontaminated as low as practicable, will be controlled as per HPP 1682.
5.4 All equipment used in the decontamination process must be handled as if contaminated until cleaned and surveyed.
5.5 All liquid waste generated during the decontamination process, including cleaning solutions, will be disposed of via the Liquid Radioactive Waste Disposal System, or as directed by the Radiation Protection Supervisor Foreman or Chemistry Supervisor t
5.6 All solid waste generated during the decontamination process will be disposed of in appropriate containers.
Shipment of solid waste off site will be in accordance with HPP 1618.
