1712 Revision 2 09/07/76 THREE MILE ISLAND NUCLEAR STATION STATION HEALTH PHYSICS PROCEDURES 1712 - Background Determination Ludlum 2000 1.0 PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to list the steps taken to deter-mine the background count rate of the Ludlum 2000 apparatus.

2.0 DISCUSSION Cue to the variation of background radiation, a background count rate must be determined daily and each time the instrument loca-tion is changed.

This instrument, with the use of different detectors may be used for Alpha and/or Beta counting. A back-grcund count rate must be determined for each detector used.

5.2 Attach the probe lead to the PROBE connection on the scaler.

5.3 Place the selector switch in BAT, or LINE if line voltage is available.

If BAT position is selected, depress BAT button and check " SAT OK" indication.

If battery replacement is required, refer to Instruction Manual.

5.4 Set minutes selector to 10 or as desired.

5.5 Ensure multiplier toggle switch is in "1" position.

5.6 Insert a clean dry planchet in sample holder in geomet to be used.

5.7 Depress the COUNT button to start counting.

5.3 At the ccmpletion of counting (red COUNT light out), record the total counts in the Counting Room Instrument Log.

5.9 Divide the total cnunts obtained by the total time counted (in minutes), to obtain background counts /nin. as per equation of Section 6.0.

5.10 This value, with time and date of calculation, is then recorded in the Counting Room Instrument Log.

5.11 Switch counting detectors if desired ant complete Steps 5.1 through 5.10 with each detector.
