- HPP 1710 Revision 2 09/07/76 THREE MILE ISLAND NUCLEAR STATION STATION HEALTH PHYSICS PROCEDURE #1710 Background Determination for Packard TRI - CARB l.0 PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to list the steps necessary to determine the background count rate on the Liquid Scintillation Counter.
2.0 DISCUSSION 2.1 Backgrounc determinations must be made on all radiation detectors if actual sample activity is to be expressed in curies or a sub-mul tiple.
Various phenomena contribute to background counts rate.
Normally blank sample (s) will be counted with a sample group to determine background count rate for the group. However, a back-ground count rate may be determined at any time.
2.2 Caution
DO NOT stop the machine unless a count is in progress.
2.3 New counting blanks should be prepared with each new sample type or at least weekly.

Gain See HPP 1741 5.2 Obtain or prepare blank background sample (s) of similar counting solution and liquid volumes to the samples to be counted.
(Suggested volume ratios in Sec. 6).
5.3 Place the background sample (s) in the changer.
Place a " start"
~
tower in front of the sample (s) and "stop" tower behind.
5.4 Allow 30 minutes dark adapt time, with door closed then turn the Sample Chancer switch to coerate.
5.5 When counting is complete switch sample changer to STOP during a count.
5.6 Record count rate in counts / min for each sample type on form 1710.2-1 attached.
