1705 Revision 2 G?/25/77 THREE MILE ISLAND NUCLEAR STAT'un STATION HEALTH PHYSICS PROCEDURE l'.)5 Efficiency Determination For NMC Proportional Counter Model PCC-llT 1.0 PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to list the steps taken to determine the counting efficiency of the PCC-llT Proportional Counter.
2.0 DISCUSSION Determination of counting efficiency is necessary to check the condition of a counting instrument on a monthly basis. The eliability of the detector or the consistency of the degree of efficiency may change for various reasons. The efficiency obtained is used in the determination of radioactivity in a sample.

Check for flow in the bubbler window.
If none is apparent, the gas cylinder may require replacement. This instrument is used for Alpha and Beta Counting, therefore an officiency for each Plateau must be determined.

5.1.5 Insure Power Supply High Voltage is set at posted value for Beta count.
5.1.6 Turn detector toggle switch to ON.
Set timer to two (2) minute count as follows:
5.1.7 Insure Preset is set to two (2).
Insure Multiplier is set to 100.
Ins e Time base is set to 0.01 min.
5.1. 8 Depress RESET button on counter.
5.1.9 Turn drawer latch to left and pull out.
Insert Beta Source in the Planchet holder with activity side up, in the appropriate counting geometry.
Close and latch the drawer.
Push PURGE button.
Purge light will light.
5.1.10 After purge light goes off, depress Start button on timer. The interval light should light. Completion of counting is indicated by the interval light going out.
5.1.11 Record the total counts in the Background and Efficiency log book.
6.1.12 Calculate efficiency as per Section six (6).
5.1.13 Recora efficiency in the Background and Efficiency log book.
5.1.14 Plot the efficiency determined on the efficiency curve located in the Background and Efficiency log book.
5.1.15 Check that current officiency is within the + 2 sigma operating range.
If not, contact the Radiation Protection Foreman.
5.1.16 Return source to the source cabinet.
The Scaler and its Power Supply are normally left energized.
