STATION HEALTH PHYSICS FROCEDURES #1703 Background Determination for Bechman Wide B?ta II 1.0 PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to list the steps taken to determine the background count rate for the Beckman Wide Beta II.
2.0 DISCUSSION The Beckman Wide Beta II is an automatic counting device for determining alpha, and/or beta radiation.
Pure,100% oxygen free, methane gas is used with a window detector, and cosmic or noise pulses are automatically rejected.

The Beckman Wide Beta II Instruction Manual #1437.
4.0 EOUIPMENT 4.1 Beckman Wide Beta II Counting System.
4.2 A Teletype Printer.
4.3 100% 0xygen free Methane Counting Gas.
4.4 A Background Planchet and Dish.
5.0 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 5.1 Open valve behind instrument controlling gas supply. Check that gas flow reads approximately 0.2 CFH.
If no gas flow is apparent, l
a gas cylinder refill may be required.
(Located outside of building).
5.2 After a 30 minute wait, open the lower right panel and turn the Plateau Point Knob to the OPERATE position.

5.4 Set the preset min kncb cn Front Panel to count time.
(10 min. or as desired).
5.5 Insure Count Moda switch in NET.
insure Operate-Leas sulten (in upper rigid p=al) in LOAD _.
5.6 After changer has stepped, press add cage advance butten (upper right panel) to bring changer to #1 cage positicn.
5.7 Place background dish and planchet in changer magazine on top of #1 cage.
(This is sample position 10).
5.8 Set first sample selector and final sample collector to 10.
5.9 Set Operate / Load switch to OPERATE. After counting starts,
turn Operate / Load switch to LOAD.
5.10 Set Cutput-Selector switch to TELETYPE.
