1701 Revision 1 09/07/76 THREE MILE ISLAND NUC' ElR STATION STATION HEALTH PHYSICS PROCEDURES 1701 Backgr:.nd Determination for G.M. Scalers 1.0 PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to list the steps taken to determine the background count rate for the G.M. Scalers.
2.0 DISCUSSION The background count rate should be determined daily to detect anomalies in background counting levels.
In addition, the background count rate is subtracted from the gross count rate when determining contamination levels on smear samples, etc.

All operatic 4s are in accordance with Scaler and H.V.
Power Supply Tech. Manuals.
5.1 Switch scaler timer line switch to "0N".
5.2 Depress power supply line switch to "0N" and allow 15 minutes warm up time.

2/2/74 1701 Revision 0 1.3 Adjust the power supply Hiah Voltaae until the voltage indicated corresponds to the value specified on the most recent plateau.
This value is available in the curve and calculations book and posted on the machine.
5.4 Insure Polarity switch in "+."
Insure Pulse Height analyses mode in "E MAX."
Insure E MIN and E Max window corresponds to setting on last plateau determination.
5.5 Set time on scaler-timer dial to desired setting e.g.10_ min.
Insure disolay switch is in counts position.
Insure preset switch is in minutes position.
Insure samolina mode switch is in manual position.
5.6 Depress reset button on scaler-timer.
5.7 Open lead Joor on detector shield and insert a clean planchet into sample holder in the desired counting geometry.
5.8 Depress Start button on scaler-timer, the " ARMED" light thould light, then the " Gate" light should light for the preset time dura tion.
(During counting sequence the " ARMED" light will be out.
5.9 On completion of the preset time, as indicated by gate light out, record the indicated counts.
5.10 Calculate Background counts / min by equation 6.1 and record data on Form H.P.P. 1701-1.
