TATION HEALTH PHYSICS PROCEDURE - 1609 Loo;c Rurface Contamination Surveys 1.0 PL'RPOS E Thic procedure describes the steps to be taken to determine the amount of loose surface contamination, if any, due to the presence of radioactive materials (liquids or powders) on working surfaces or floors.

If contamination is present, steps must be taken to clean the areas involved or control access in order to prevent spreading.

2.0 DISCUSSION 2.1 There samples are normally referred to as " smears", or " swipes".

2.2 The following are loose surface contamination limits:

2 Clean Area - Beca Ganma sy - <1000 DPM/100 cm Alpha a - <100 DPM/100 cm 2

Contaminated Area Beta Gamma sy - >1000 DPM/100 cm 2

Alpha a - >100 DPM/100 cm

4.6 Counting Equipment.

5.0 OPERATI'4G It4STRUCTI0tlS 5.1 Smear envelopes may be numbered to correspond with survey points.

5.2 Hold the smear paper and wipe over an area of 100 cm2 (e.g., a 4 inch square or a 16 inch S figure).

5.3 Place smear papers in envelopes.

5.4 Mark smear locations on survey map corresponding to points of survey (See Figure 1609-1).

5.5 After the smears are obtained, return to the H.P. Lab, remove the smears from the coin envelopes and scan over them with an H.P. 210 probe attached to an RM-14.

5.6 If the count rate is less than 100 CPM above backgruund the CPM will be less than 1000 DPM 5.7 If the count rate is near 100 CPM above background count the smear in the appropriate instrument for one minute.

5.8 Calculate the disintegrations per minute (DPM) by using the following formula:

Disintegrations per minute = Counts / min. less backaround Counting Efficiency Background as per H.P.P. #1701 Efficiency as per H.P.P. #1704 f40TE:

The latest backgrounds and efficiencies are recorded at the counting equipment.

5.9 If the activity, ir. counts per minute, on the smears.is less than I

the value computed by using the following formula:

188 355 Background plus b 8KGD then no detectable loose surface contamination is present.

i 1609 Revision 3 04/11/77 5.10 The limits indicated in step 2.2 apply when detectable loose surface contamination is present.

5.11 Record results on appropriate Survey Form such as 1609-1.
