1662 Revision 1 05/31/77 THREE MILE ISLAND NUCLEAR STATION STATION HEALTH PHYSICS PROCEDURE 1662 Collection of Environmental Rainwater Samples 1.0 PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to describe the method of collecting the routine rainwater samples in the environs of TMINS.
2.0 DISCUSSION In accordance with the TMINS Environmental Technical Specifications, Table 3, rainwater samples are collected monthly from the environs of TMIt'c and sent to an outside vendor for the required analyses.

TM-RW-5Al Monthly Observatien Center TM-RW-8Cl Monthly Falmouth Collins Substation Each collection system consists of a collecting funnel 12h" in diameter which is connected to a five gallon plastic jerry can by tygon tubing.
At each station the accumulated rainfall is collected.
Normally only the one gallon prelabelled jugs arc taken into the field.
Standby five gallon jugs are taken for each station if freeze-up of the field jugs is a possibility.
C:; TION: At no time during the sample collecting procedures shall the sample collector or anyone accompanying him wear a tritium dial wrist watch.

1662 Revision 0 09/09/76 4.0 ECUIPMENT 4.1 Four (4) new one gallon sampling jugs.
4.2 One (1) Sample Receipt Sheet (Form 1662-1).
4.3 One (1) Sample Collection Sheet (Form 1660-1).
4.4 Sufficient cartons to ship the collected samples to Contractor Laboratory.
4.5 Indelible marker or equivalent, pens, pencils, tape for sealing cartons.
4.6 Four (4) spare prelabelled five gallon jerry cans; one for each station (during persistent freezing weather).
4.7 Preaddressed labels.
5.0 OPERATING PROCEDURE At each sample location:
5.1 Disconnect the tygon tubing from the jerry can, shake the can, completely empty the contents into the toilection jug (or fill the jug and dispose of the excess), and then cap the jug.
5.2 Reconnect the tygon tubing to the jerry can.
5.3 Label the jug, con.plete the appropriate section of the Sample Receipt Sheet and Sample Collection Sheet inclum.ng:
5.3.1 Dates of sample period, time of collection, and sample code.
NOTE:
Enter the time under " Comments" column.
Sample start date may be found on data sheet inside air particulate scmpler.
5.3.2 Approximate quantity of sample.
5.3.3 Any unusual conditions; e.g., algal growth in jerry can, etc.
5.3.4 Enter date of rain collection on the data sheet inside the Air Sampler.

cans and pour the collected rainfall into the collection jug after it thaws.
5.5 Packaging and Shipment.
5.5.1 Package and ship the samples to appropriate off site vendor by United Parcel Service.
Ship the completed and signed Sample Receipt Sheet in the envelope with the samples and mark the envelope accordingly. The requiremer.ts for shipping by United Parcel Service are available in the Unic One Warehouse.
