1963 Revision 1 02/03/77 THREE MILE ISLAND NUCLEAR STATION STATION CHEMISTRY PROCEDURE 1963 GAS ANALYSIS USING A GAS CHRCMATORGRAPH 1.0

SUMMARY

A gas sample of unknown composition can be analyzed for nitrogen, i

hydrogen, and oxygen content using the fisher gas partitioner.

Calibration curves can be generated by injecting various amounts of calibration gas into the partitioner and noting detector response.

2.0 APPARATUS 2.1 Fisher gas partitioner and recorder.

2.2 Gas syringes of various size.

2.3 Calibraticn gas cylinders and accessories.

2.4 Gas samole bulbs with seotums.

3.0 REAGENTS - None.

4.0 PRCCE URE 4.1 Open the lab supply valve for the carrier gas (Arganl.

4.2 Adjust oressure reculator to 2f) PSIG.

Adjust gas flow to 80 cc/ Min.

4.3 Set cell current switch on the gas partitioner to low.

4.4 Depress the 10% Eutton on the sensitivity switch to turn on cell current.

Turn on recorder.

4.5 Allow 20 minutes for the system to reach thermal equilibration.

4.6 Bring pen to desired location on the chart using the balance control.

4.7 Prepare a calibration curve (SCP 1956.1) for each component to be analy:ed.

Inject varicus amcunts of calibration gas into the partitioner and record detector response in mm.

For each aliquot 4

of gas.

ake duplicate injections.

(Generally the injected volumes will rance fron 0.lcc to 0.5ccl.

Revision 1 02/03/77 4.8 Label each calibration curve with the following informaticn:

4.8.1 Calibration gas.

4.8.2 Carrier gas.

4.8.3 Sensi ti vi ty.

1 4.8.4 Cell current.

i 4.8.5 Gas flow rate.

4.8.6 Date prepared.

4.8.7 Expiration date.

4.9 Obtain a sample of an unkncwn gas in a gas sample bulb equipoed with a septum.

4.10 Remove a 0.5cc sample of this gas and expel it into the hood.

4.11 Remcve another 0.5cc sample of the unknown gas and inject it into the gas partitioner.

NOTE:

Any sample volume under 0.5cc could also be injected.

Record the detector response.

4.12 Calculate the volume percent of each ccmponent gas in the sample as folicas:

Vol% = A/S x 100 AE Partial volume of the component.

(Read frcm the calibration graph).

B s Volume of sample injected.

2.12.1 The 98 0 Mini Ccmputer % Gas Program may also be used.
