02/03/77 THREE MILE ISLAND NUCLEAR STATION STATICN CHEMISTRY PROCEDURE 1961 OXYGEN DETECTCR CALISRATION 1.0

SUMMARY

.=

0xygen concentrations must be determined in varicus blanketed tanks.

The laboratory detection and measurement of oxygen is Jased ucon separation, in a molecular seive followed by passage over a thermal conductivity element, of the various gasses which make up a sample.

Oxygen concentration is detarmined by measuring the height of the oxygen peak of an unknown and ccmcaring it to a calibration graph prepared frcm kncwn concentrations of oxygen.

2.0 APPARATUS 2.1 Fisher gas partitioner.

2.2 Assorted gas syringes.

2.3 Assorted gas sample bulbs.

2.4 Graduates.

3.0 REAGENTS 3.1 Argon; cnrcmatographic grade.

3.2 Oxygen; minimum 99% purity.

4.0 PRCCEDUPE 4.1 Cetermine the exact volume of eacn of the gas sample bulbs by filling with water and draining the contents into a graduate.

4.2 Purge each sample bulb thercughly with Argon and isolate.

4.3 Prepare a 0-5% set of standards of oxygen in Argon by injecting aliquots of oxygen into the sample bulbs prepared in Step 4.2.

a Calculate the volume of oxygen to be added to obtain the decired percentage as folicws:

4.5 Plot oxygen peak height vs. oxygen concentration on linear paper.

Oxygen concentrations of unknows may ncw be determined by comparison with this calibration curve.
