Revision 1 10/29/77 THREE MILE ISLAND NUCLEAR STATION STATION CHEMISTRY PROCEDURE 1958.2 INSTRUMENT OPERATION OF HEWLETT PACKARD MCA 1.0

SUMMARY

e This procedure describes the normal operation of the Hewlett-

]

Packard multi-channel analyzer (MCA).

The MCA system is used to qualitatively and quantitatively measure the gamma radiation emitted by a sample.

A germanium lithium (Geli) scintillation crystal is used for converting the gamma radiation to electrical pulses for use by the MCA.

The analyzer then accumulates these pulses of various energies and converts them to a binary code.

Interpretation of the data is accomplished by transferring the binary code to a small ccmputer which, with the aid of the Cran Program, will calculate and print out the activity found in a sample.

1958.2 Revision 1 10/29/77 4.2 Energy Calibration 4.2.1 Insure the " input offset volts" switch is set to the Var

-1 to +1 position and the " input offset volts" pot is set to approximately 5.00.

137 60 f

4.2.2 91 ace a CS

- C0 source on the detector.

4.2.3 Erase MCA by switching the " Function" switch to Erase position and press Start button.

4.2.4 Set " Timing Control" to accumulate for 20 minutes.

(Ref.

Appendix A).

4.2.5 Place " Function" switch in Accumulate and press Start button.

4.2.6 Display the accumulated spectrum on the scope by turning

" Function" switch to Disolay and press Start.

4.2.7 Cetermine the peak channel r. umbers for the main photopeaks.

To use markers : urn " Function" switch to Read, " Display Mode" to Markers, I/O Cevice Selector to Disclay and press Start.

The " Memory Sub Group" channel indicators can now be used to position markers.

137 60 4.2.8 The CS photopeak should appear at channel 1323 and the C0 photopeak should appear at channel 2665.

Set for a differential 137 of 1342 channels between the twc peaks (CS C060),

4.2.9 If the photopeaks do not have the proper number of cnannels ht'.<een, adjust " Fine Gain" on the amplifier.

Repeat steps 4.2.3 through 4.2.9 until correct numcer of channels appear between peaks.

4.2.10 Now adjust " Input Offset '/olts" until centroid channel coincides a

with the corAect photopeak energy, Receat steps ;.2.3 through 4.2.10 as necessary.

181 001 2.0 A

1958.2 Revision i 10/29/77 NOTE:

Since there is some interaction between the input offset volts and the amplifier gain, several attempts may be required to gt+ both peaks into proper channels.

4.2.11 Run a Cram program energy calibration per SCP 1958.3 and Redo 4.2.1 to 4.2.11 if necessary.

j 4.3 Analyzing a laboratory sample 4.3.1 Prepare the sample to be counted so that it conforms to a

_ cmetry for.vhich an efficiency vs. energy curve exists.

(SCP 1958.3 Appendix A).

. 3.2 Assure that an energy calibration has been run in the past 24 hours2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br />.

If not do an energy calibration before counting sample (SCP 1958.3 Sect. 4.1 ).

4.3.3 Place s; mole into correct counting gec etry on Geli Detector.

NOTE:

.A deadtime of less than 10-155 is des irable.

4.3.4 Erase the "CA by switching the " Function" switch t; Erase and press Start.

4.3.5 Set " Timing Control" to accumulate for 20 minutes.

(Ref.

Appendix A).

4.3.6 Place "Functicn" saitch in Accumulate and press Start.

4.3.7 When counting is complete analyze per SCP 1958.3 Section a.2.

4.4 Using the 9862 X-Y plotter with the 9830 calculator.

4.4.1 Place a piece of semi-logarithmic graph paper on plotter.

4.a.2 Cepress the "Line" buttcn to turn on the plotter.

4.4.3 Depress the " Chart Hold" buttor, to electrostatically hold paper to platen.

7 a.4.4 Remove small plastic cap fecm ;en and check for ink.

1958.2 Revision 1 10/29/77 4.4.5 Depress " Pen Up" button.

4.4.6 Depress "Lcwer Left" button and adjust pen for left hand margins on paper by rotating arrowed knobs.

4.4.7 Depress " Upper Right" button and adjust pen for right hand margins by using the other set of arrowed knobs.

1 NOTE:

The plotter is now ready to receive signals frcm the 9830 calculator.
