t NOTE TO FILE: k3 MESSAGE FROM T. ESSIG, NRC VAN, AT 0930 4/3 Tom called to provide information on sampl:. results of releases from the IWST.
He said the van received a batch of about 12 samples all at once.
He wan't sure exactly when they received the samples.
The NRC van and SAI:(for the licensee) arc each counting the samples.
When the 12 samples were received, half were given to SAI for analysis and half retained by NRC.
The two organizations then exchanged samples to analyze the second half. As a result of this sample switching, the twelve samples were not analyzed in the same order as they were collected.
The first time NRC analyzed a sample showing positive iodine was at 1430 on ^':
This particular sample was collected at 0400 on 3/31.
Subsequent nalysis showed the first evidence of iodine being releasci occurred with a sample collected at 2000 on 3/30.
This particular sample was analyzed J/
at 0133 on 4/1.
Tom also said that Bill Dornsife of Penna. Radiological Health is the onsite contact for the State.
Tom said that Bill has been in and out constantly.
Tom spoke to Bill about the IWST sample results.
Bill said he didn't recall exactly when he was informed of the results (whether the afternoon of 3/31 or on 4/1) but he did feel that there has been good coordination and that all information has been received in a timely manner.
Tom also pointed out tat the on scene analysis is considered ' quick and dirty," that the plume was interfering with counting and they are only l
doing a 10 minute count.
He said all samples are being sent to the State of Maryland for a more accurate analysis.
