,d DRAFT 4/8/79
Dear Dr. Schlesinger:
I wish to express my appreciation to you for the support the Department of Energy is continuing to provide through its staff and contractors during the recovery from the Thrce Mile Island accident.
The promptness and extent of that response and the capabilities provideo have been gra ti fyi ng.
The NRC has relied heavily on 00E--as provided by the Interagency Radiological Assistarce Plan--for off-site nonitoring support supplementing the monitoring performed by the NRC and other federal and state agencies.
In addition, COE has been instrumental in obtaining and providing specialized assistance in such areas as meterology and communications, as well as collecting and providing to NRC records of monitoring results.
Until the situation at Three Mile Island has subsided further, we believe that the CCE should continue to provide support to the NRC, including the assembly and collating of data.
Beginning the week of April 9,1979, we will be evaluating the extent of needs for the continuing effort at TMI.
This evaluation will, of course, include your staff.
b Chairman 168 031
