When the NucTear ReTulatory Cormission (NRC) established its current regulations and guidance on acceptable programs for respiratory pro-i,, J.
tection (10 CFR Part 20, 20.103(c) and Regulatory Guide 8.15), it announced its intention to revise the guidance as better infomation could be obtained and made available.
The Los Alamos Scientifi:
Laboratory (LASL) has been developing pertinent infomation under NRC contract and has submitted a Progress Report on' protection factors for air-line supplied-air respirators LA-7098-PR, and an Informal Report on supplied-air-hoods, LA-NUREG-6612-MS.

._.2 The report on air-line respirators indicates that the protection provided (protection factor) by certain full facepiece and half-mask facepiece, demand-mode-operated, air-if ne. Supplied air respirators is significantly less than was previously estimated from the limited information that was available wFen the protection factors in the current NRC guidance were published (Mgulatory Guide 8.15, Table I).
Specifically, the current guidance lists protection factors of 10 for half-mask facepieces and 50 for full f;cepieces that are used with air-line equipment that is operated in the. demand _ mode.

Met-Ed's leti,er_ of August 11, 1973.(GQL 1330), in response to IE Bulletin 78-07, stated tnat the air-lino supplied regulators vould be modified to
. prevent operation in the deraand mode, and that the modification would be ecrspleted by September 30, 1978. Hovever, the equipment vendor advised Met-Ed that installatio,n of the proposed modification would null and void the manufacturer'c'varranty.
Met-Li carrently uses SCO'IT P/N 802230 full facepiece assemblics, which as nta,ed in our responco, can be oper?.ted in either the demand mode or the continuouu-flow mode.
