EVALUATION OF GPU/ BURNS & R0E DESIGN FOR SHORT AND LONG TERM WATER SOLID STEAM GENERATOR OPERATION Referring to the long and short term water solid operation for steam generators A & B we have concluded the following: (where possible we have cross referenced your list of high priority tasks identified in Tel f o r d ': memo of April 10, 1979) 1. Short Term Ooeration of Steam Generator A (see Figure 1) We concur in the proposed method of sperat ion subject to verification of the following items: A. We have been nformed some pipe hangers will be p:nned, we intend to review the basis and method for pinning in more depth (item 37, Mattson's list). B. Instaslation and connection of two 2500 KW, 4160 V diesel generators (i tem 4, 38, 43 Ma t tson's l is t). We intend to review this design and recemend that a procedure be developed for this hook up. C. We will review the procedures and analyses for taking steam generators A & 3 water solid (items I, 11, 19, 20 & 21 Mattsen's list). 11. Short Term Coeration of Steam Generator B (see Figure 2, item I, 22, 29 Nattson's list) A. See item 1.A in addition we will ceview the design of the additional piping and valves being installed with regard to: 1. Piping supports 2. Supporting structural members 163 269 79052300%T O O

We want to review the proceduros for tieing into the 10 inch diameter feedwater flush connection and main steamline recognizing there are no isolation valves between these connections and the steam generator. C. See item I.C 0. Review package for use of secondary services cooler (Item 30 Mattson's memo) til. Long Term Steam Generators A & B (see Figure 3) A. Referring to the B&W attachment we concur with the water chemistry and specific piping regt'irements. We recon.nend that there be no specific seismic requirements. However, we recommend that quality assurance considerations be addressed in the develop-ment of procedures for design, fabrication, installation and testing. B. See item I.A C. See item I.C D. See item 1.B E. The design should consider the structural requirements with regard to the additional loads. With regard to Figure 3 discussion with GPU ond B&W indicate that one train of equipment is sufficient upon verification that adequate core decay heat removal can be accomplished with only one loop on natural circuiation.
