'ORON MEASUREMEt.T5 7ECM L/11/73 PRIMARv SYETEM SAMPLE (NCN-PRE E 5UR I Z ED)
The orinary sample taken on 4/11/79 was split and send to Eettis, S L'd, ORNL and SRL fo analysis.
This note is to document the Soron analysis results obtained from each organization.
No instructions or recommendations on the type of analysis techni-que desired accompanied these samples.
As a result, four different sample analysis technicues were used.
Figure 1 provides a so, mary of analysis results.
BL'd ha s considerr.ble exoerience and is quite confident in their analvsis techniques (Don Nitti and Jack Hicks, 824-334-5111).
-efore initiating de-boration by the additional demineraliced water to ne MU t ank, the Tec h n i c a l Review Group (Arnale, etc.) recuested verification by an indenendent source, i.e.
f.a t i cna l '_ a b.
Of the
'bree Labs, ORNL has the more cn alete and accurate verificrtion.
See the Attachment to Figure 1 for discussion of each labs analysis.
Ba,ed on the ORNL analysis a decision was reached on Friday, April 13, 1979 to begin cican water addition.
At the time of the evening olanning meeting 1800, the calculated FPM Soron was 2973 This assumes the starting point was 3000.
NRR opera-tions will nonitor the Soron concentration based on Meted cal-culation and compare these calculations with primary samole 790521001,3

Figure 2 is a p;ot of 1 esa calculatient 2
and an indication o' analysis results.
It appears that the rateup with dem i ne r a l i,c d v.a t e r w i l l aintain the baron concentration rather than decrease it since the Icalage frce the plant is 'iLely to ac steam.

Col or ir.e t r ic me thod used, first step was to dilute sample by 500.
NRC discounted this technique.
Bogar explained that Eettis was unable to recheck analysis using mass spec (isotopic dilution)<,
would take 5 cays to get ready for analysis.

CRNL Schult home number (615) 483-8329 took g eat care in cleaning sample bottle used three methods in view of NRC concern over the accuracy of Soron Mass Spec. most accurate.
They also used emission scectronetry as a ballpark check and nicrotitration to check results from " ass Soec.
CRNL very confident in results.
Sased on disc. with Schults on correlation of BLW and ORNL results NRC concluded that Baron above 3h00 pom as of h/13/79.
SRL Overman and Ann Gibbs (303-279-2714).
Giagnainc dilution re-quired for carbon rod atomic abosrption method (ended up with 20 ul sample) concern with turbidity of soln., secondary analy-sis increased concentration from 2600 to 3100 after shaking vile.
Gibbs concerned with B leaching on pa r t i cl es in sample.
