{ZAb 6.,9TW5CG Sutiect Sequence of Events Following

~~

Loss of RC Pu=o 2A To J. HERBEIN Location TMI Trailer City, #11 G. MILLER The previously approved sequence of events (as defined in EP-32) to be followed if RC Pu=p 2A fails is as follows:

1)

At t e=p t to start RC Pu=p 1A/'

2)

If that fails, atte=pt to start RC Pu=p 1B or 2B (see below) 3)

If that fails, atte=pt to cool with natural circulation 4)

If that fails, start the HPI pumps On April 17, RC Pu=p 13 was tagged out.

In effect, this modified the above sequence by deleting frc= Step 2 the attempt to start RC Pu=p 13.

This was based on an experience at SMUD where large vibrations were reported when a pump stopped and the dia=etrically opposite pump was started.

Additional information has now been received which indicates that the reported vibrations were particular to the SMUD reactor vessel, and core barrel. There re=ains, however, a possible ele =ent of uncertainty in starting the opposite pu=p.

It has therefore been decided to remove the tag from RC Pu=p 1B, but not to atte=pt to start it unless all other pu=ps have been tried and failed, and natural circulation has been atta=pted and failed.

Effective i==ediately, the sequence to be followed if RC Pu=p 2A is lost is as follows:

'1)

Atte=pt to start RC Pu=p 1A 2)

If that fails, atte=pt to start RC Pump 23 3)

If that fails, atte=pt to establish natural circulation 4)

If that fails, atte=pt to start RC Pu=p 1B 5)

If that fails, start the HPI pumps The supporting actions and precautions for thes<. steps remain as approved in EP-32.
