Operating License !!c. OFR-73 Decket ?!o. 50-320 Reactor 7essel Cavity An=lus This letter is in respctse to your letter cf February 2, 1978, regarding the reactor cavity a=ulus seal ring and associated biolcgical shielding on Three Mile Island :Iuclear Statica, Unit :ic. 2 (I'E-2).
Please be advised that the reactor cavity a=ulus seal ring is not left in place during nor=al Operaticn. Biological shielding is installed in the reactor cavity annulus.
Biological shielding of the reacter cavity annulus is accc plished by twelve sheet metal tanks containing water which form an annular ring located at the top of the reactor subec=part ats and around the reacter vessel. These tanks are designed so t% + "ay will neither clog vent paths ner becc=e missiles in the extremely imprcbable event of a pipe break inside the re-actor vessel cavity. A description of the tank design, its operation and the analysis perfor-ed to demenstrate their acceptability can be fcund in Supplement 3 of the FSAR in response to questica 42.3/6.2.1.1 beginning en page 33 h2-3a.
