Ell /IE The f.'uclear Ecuulatory Conuission has received additions! information frc;n its inspectors at the Three Mile Island Pv,.or Plant in Pennsylvdnia J
where an accident occurred earlier today.
This updates the liRC announce-trent maele earlier today,
~
a No injuries have been reported.
Lou levcis of radiaticn have been 1
I l
measured off the plant site.
The m.iximum ccnfirmed radiation reading war, about three milliroentgens per hour abouc one-third mile from the site.
1 At one mile, a reading of cne railliroentgen per hour was measured.
It is believed that this is principally direct radiation coming from radioactive raterial within the reactor containment building, rather than from release 1
of radioactive matr. rials frc ' the containment.
Extensive efforts are continuing by the State of Pennsylvania, the Department of Energy, and the NRC to measure the amount of radioactive material which may have been i
released frca the site. A helicooter with special instruments also is beiry i
- used, j
It now appears that the cause of the turbine shutdoun at the plant early tcday was a reduction in flow of fendvater to the steam generators.
I The sequedce of events which led to the release of' radioactivity to the reactor containment build ~ng has not been detemined.
There was a release of primary ccolant voter to the containment.
Emergcncy core w
. cooling systems are continuing to provide wacer to cool the fuel. The rr. actor is shut down.
The pressure in the reactor systcm is being sicwly cduced.
