UNIT SHUTDOWN CUE TO A FEEDWATER VALVE MALFUNCTION At 4:00 p.m., on April 10, 1979, the Residant Inspector notified the Regional office that Indian Point Unit 3 had shutdcun at 3:49 p.m., dua to a feedwater regulating valve malfunction which had caused the reactor to trip as a result of low steam ganerator v:ater level.
All sy<,tems functioned normally. The cause of the valve malfunction > as a track in the 1/4" instrument air line betwaen the signal converter and t:1e valve pcs i tione r.
Repairs were made and tha unit was critical at 9:05 p.,
and synchronized to the grid at 11:39 p.m.
Media interest is expected because of the recent incident at Three Mile Island which was caused in part by feedwater system prcbicms.
The State of New York was infomed. A press release is not planned by the licensee or NRC.
NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the resident inspector at 4:00 p.m., April 10, 1979.
