M 9 1978 Docket No. 50 320 MEMORECCM FOR:

H. Silver, Project Manager, L'JR 4, DPM TROM:

P. S. Check, Chief, Core Perfor=ance Branch, DOS SU3 JECT:

HTJRCSTATIC TESTING AT THEE MILE ISlM'D, UNIT 2 Three Mile Island (TXI), Unit 2, proposes hydrostatic testing of their vessel at 1300F and 2235 pai with the nev nuclear fuel installe.d but suberitical. Babcock and Wilcox has analyzed the fuel assmbly behavior durinit these tests and has concluded that the tests will have no affect upon the structural integrity and safety of the unirradisted fuel assenb1"ca. The Pmactor Fuels Section of the Core Performance Branch has reviewed the hydrostatic parameters and agrees with the B&W assess-ment that fuel assembly integrity and safety will not be impatted by these tests. Therefore, with regard to the fuel assemblies, we find the proposed hydrostatic tests for THI 2 to be acceptable.
