St7dARY OF MEETING OH OPEN IHMS Representatives of the applicant and his contracton met with mer,6ers of the staff (list of attendees enclosed) on Decerber 8,1977, to discuss the resolutica of various open items as, follows.

MU-V-12 (Excessive drwkun of the cateuc tank in a LOCA)

The applic.;.nt proposed to rearrange the alignment of the three high pressure injection puaps so that in the vent of a LOCA, with or without offsite power, only two HPI ptsaps will operate..one taking suction on the bc, rated water storage tank, the other on the makeup tant. In this configuntion, the applicant states that suction conditicas are such that the BWST elevation provides 5;.ifficient head to preclude flow odtfof 'theTJ tank':iantil ~theTBWST level drops sufficiently. At this time, flow will cc::cence fm the HU tank, but until switchover totthe recirculation mode a leg of water will always be maintained in the HU tank or line fmm the tant. After switchover, the HPI ptscs take suction fm the low head pumps, rather than the HU tank. Therefore, according to the applicant, the MU tank and line cannot be drained to the point where the tank hydrogen cover gas can be pulled into the pumps possibly causing pump da= age.

Questions were raised about the t ydrogen contal valving and MU tank charging J

procedures. The applicant will address these conceres in tWinfomation to be submitted by the applicant to docu=ent their presentation.

Baron Flow Sensors The applicant iciu s cd tbathecdescciptite infocIation arovidid in'/ advance

. copies of pages from Acendment 61, to be formally subtritted en Dececeer 16, 1977. With regard to tests to de: castrate systen capa'ility and to calibrata c

instrumentation, the appitcant stated these will be performed by cosoletion of lct power physics testing.

.s M 03 E Metro"w tan Edison Comcany Reactor Building Scra/ Purc NPSH The applicant presented new curves showing systeen flow characteristics, pump head curves, and resultant NPSH required. A letter fmm S&W (enclosed) was presented, indicating their expectation that the "A" pumo could operate 3 to 5 days without significant damage at the NPSH available. at Witch point it would show a 5% head loss. The applicant proposes no physical fix, but rather administrative action to. thrcttle flow via push-button valve control, within 3 days. The applicant further noted that procedures call for flow throttlino to the nominal 1500 GPM in the infection mode (within 45 minutes afterthe postulated accident). If this is done, flow in the recirculation mode would be such (1770 GPM) that available NPSH is adequate for continuous pump operation. Throttling to 1500 GPM in the recirculation mode would further imorove the situation.

The applicant also stated that pump vibration during testing at icw NPSH conditions res01ted in pump vibration within limits specified for r.ormal operation.

The applicant will document informatian to us regarding their proposal, including all test infomation, procedures, pump descriptive infomation, impeller tip speed, actual NPSH available, and system characteristics as verified by preoperational test data..

Lono Term Cooling The applicant stated that a letter report will be submitted by December 16, 1977.
