to inspe : geci pical and foundation anginacrin?. scatur; of the sitc and to discuss Q-1 <1uestions and res;cuses with the ap;licant and/cr his representatives. GPU Service Ccrporatica represcr cd the apoliccat, Matrepolitan Edison Ccopany.
~~he A & Z, Lorns and Nc, Inc. and Gilbert.6ssociates were responsible ror geologica2. aspects along vit Gilberta' consultant. Dr. Mr rin Kaufnan.
Tac nornin:; was devoted to an inspectien of the dike and'Fip-rapped slope adjacent to and between the Category I intake structure ic:
Units 1 and Unit 2.
Failure of these rip-rapped sicpes could in; ede the flew of safe shut down Vater fron the river into these tvo structures.
Care Sorings from holes RS-4(MI) and 2-4 were also inspected: all cores are stored in a varchouse at Harrisburg International Airport. Luring the af ternoon, we inspected a partially open excavation for the air intake structure of Unit 2 and discussed Q-1 questions and responses.
Inspecticn of Core RB-4('CO, drilled during the Unit 1 enploraticn progr2.n to a depth of 120 f t.. indicated that the shale foundstions are adequatr for the safe support of all plant structures. Ecring 2-4, drilled during Unir 2 exploration to a depth of 43 f t. also indicated adequate foundation coMitions for structures founded on shales.
No organic r.aterial was apparent in these corec. although one or two clay seats vere coted.
The rir-rapped dike section between the two intake structures showed scar.e surficial distress in the half next to the Unit 2 intake structure.
In this area, possible eresion and subsidance of the supporting dike r.atetials r.my have caused several low spots and sags to the surface of the rip-rap. The construction sequence of the dike snd cofferdan for the Unita2 intake did not assure that rip-rapped slopes were supported by properly engineered fill. Burns and Roe and Gilbert Associates representatives vill investicate the quality of this fill and vill perform appropriate stability analysia c ' these slopes.
A discussion of the Q-1 questions and responses vill be prepared by the LP". f or this plant.
