DeYoung..Jr., Assistant Director for LWR's, DP'i N v: u r n ~e, G. /,,<5 x D.:5 CONSIDERATION OF ALTERNATIVE TO PREOPERATIONAL FICIPCULATION TEST Plant Name: Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 2 Docket Number: STN 50-320 Licensing Stage: OL Responsible Branch & Project Leader:

L'JR 2-2, H. Silver Technical Review 3 ranch Involved: Reactor Systems Branch The NRC staff was asked if they would consider a proposal for a scaled

nodel test of the su=p area of Three Mile Island 2 as an alternative to a preoperational test of the plant with the ECCS in the recir-culation : node.

The staff concludes that a test is required for Three Mile Island 2 to verify vertex control during operation in the recirculation node.

The staff will consider proposals for a preoperational test and/or a scale model test designed to provide this verification.

If a scale model test program is proposed, it should include a cowarison of model and plant, a list of sensitivity and perturbation studies to be perfor=ed, and a discussion of the acceptance criteria for inter-preting the tests.

The successful verification of vorter control vill not in itcelf satisfy all the requirunents for the recirculation test. A reduced flow recirculation test taking water frota the st=rp room is required to verify acceptable pressure drops across screening, suction lines and valves.

If the applicant chooses to propose the scaled test, he should also propose a reduced flow sump test.
