Moore, Assistant Director for Light Water Reactors, Group 2 Division of Reactor Licensing METROPOLITAN EDISON CD. - THREE MILE ISLAND.ujCLEAR STATION, UNIT #2 - TEMPORARY POLAR CPANE SAru ( EVALUATION Plant Name: Three Mile Island, Unit 2 Licensing Stage: FSAR - OL Review Occket Nuder: S0- 320 Responsible Branch and Project Manager: LWR 2-2; 3. Washi: urn Requested Completion Date: N/A Applicant's response date necessary for completion of next action planned on project: !!/A Description of Responsa: Letter Review Status: Cocolete of the Temporary Polar Crane; effect of structural steel ededded in concrete The infomation contained in the applicant's letter dated January 7,1975 has been reviewed and evaluated by the Structural Engineering Branch of Licensing. This infomation covers the effects of struc-tural steel of the Tecorar/ Polar Crane supports.left ededded in Catagory I concrete. The information is provided in tno parts:
(a) Analysis of the concrete used in the walls supporting the Fuel Handling Pcol, in which the temporary steel supports cf the crane are ededded.
(b) Sumnary of the stre'.s analysis of the "as-built" Fuel Hand;ing Pool Supporting walls, containing the emoedded structural steel.
These two studies describe the characteristics of concrete "as-built" and the order of magni +.Jde of stresses generatcJ in concrete during various design conditions. They include the effect of the ededded structural steel. The applicant's opinien.is that these studies demonstrate that the structural integrity of the valls "as-built" is r.ot impaired by the embedded structural steel and t"at the concrete walls can perform their function without impairing the public safety.
