TRIP REPORT - VISIT FOR FIRE PROTECTIO" EVALUATION Fac il i ty:
Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 2 Docket Number:
50-320 Applicant: Metropolitan Edison Company, Jersey Control Power and Light Comoany, and Pennsylvania Electric Co.
On January 2-6, 1978 representatives of the NRC staff met with the applicant's reorasentative to visit the plant site. The purpose of this visit was for NRC staff members to observe the plant features pertinent to the plant's fire protection program.
A list of participants frem the NRC staff, the applicants' stcff and consultants is enclosed (Enclosure 1).
The visit followed the standard site visit agenda for fire protection.
During the course of the visit the staff revised their list of recuests for additional information which was transnitted previously to the applicant on December 27, 1977.
Such revisions ar e identified (Enclosure 2).
At the conclusion of the visit, the staff identified their concerns and positions which were discussed extensively with the aoolicant.
Those cositions and the applicant's commitments are attached (Enclosure 3).
In addition, the acplicant has connitted to:
1) completion of all proposed fire protection program prior to the fuel loading; except the manual actuation backup to the automatic Halon system in the cable screading rocm vehich may be delayed for several weeks.
Certain interin measure will be proposed.
- 2) provide written response to the staff's requests for additional information by January 11, 1978.

- 3) provide, by Jarvary 11, 1978, schedules for imolementing additional modifications specified in staff positions which the applicant has committed to.
- 4) provide, by January 11, 1973, a list of fire areas where the assumotion that cables inside metal conduits will not be diabled by the design basis fire leads to a different conclusion in the fire hazard analysis.
