Dear Rep. Walker:
I am writing to let my views known on the recent crisis (fiasco) at TMI.
I cannot believe the way officials of Met Ed and the SRC tried to ' hide' what was happening there from the general public......and from yourself, Sen. Schweiker and Sen. Heina.
This indicates to me a very low regard, if any, for the many human lives involved!
When I realize what could have happened had they not been able to get the thing under control, I can assure you I do not consider the risk worth it.....not for a mere 13% of our total energy requirement! There are other alternatives that could be looked into, such as, the use of COAL.
During this past ' black' week, I have been doing a lot of meditation and would like to share with you some of the questions that came to mind:
- 1) Why was this plant allowed to remain in operation when, after several safety inspections by the NRC, it was discovered that Safety Standards were not being met?
2)
What are they (Met Ed) going to do with the radioactive waste?
Bury it and create a future problem.....one that our children and grandchildren will have to deal with?
- 3) Who is going to have to pay for this?
The way Met Ed operates, they'll probably try to ' stick' the consumers with it!
- 4) Why are nuclear plants permitted to build and operate with no safety standards thus creating a high health risk, and especially in this area....one of the richest, most fertile farmlands in the U.S.?
"acse plants endanger our livestock, pastures, milk, produce, etc., with their constant radiation pollution.
The food and livestock produced here is supplied to other parts of ~ the U.S.,
in addition to supplying the i= mediate area.70-073

Rep. Robert S. Walker 4-5-79
- 5) Why risk human lives by exposing them to radiation and possibly a catastrophe such as the one we have just faced this week....
all for a mere 13" of our required energy?
I, for one, resent being subjected to every day radiation which is now known to create terminal cancer in humans!
I know the ' experts' tell us that "small amounts (by whose standards?) of radiation will not hurt us".....but, I do not believe them.....not after this past week!
I don't think they know or care what effects their radiation has on the human race!
They have only one thought in mind and that is MONEY and POWER!
I do not view this luck of concern for pecple's safety as a
' democracy at work' but, rather, a dictatorship!
This past week has been a 'nightzare' for me as I am sure it has been for a lot of others, and I do not want to be faced with anything like it in the future' I feel we are very ' lucky' this time, that it is a
' warning' from the Supreme Power That Be to stop and take a good, hard look at what we're doing.....maybe if there's a next time we won' t be so fortunate.
Mr. Walker, pleasa use your influence to have other sources of energy checked out and, meanwhile, oppose the building of more nuclear plants such as the one proposed for Fulton Township by Philadelphia Electric.
Our farmland is one of our greatest assets and far too precious to have it endangered by nuclear radiation pollution.
Sincerely & Respectfully vours, L /An 8'. ( x!cw (Mrs.) Thelma E. Hodsen teh
