BAW-10007, Rev. 1; 3A*,.'-10 02 9 Report Ti:le:

Control Red Drive Mcchanism Tes: Progran Repor: Ds:cs:

June 1971 and January 1972 Originating Organi:a:1on:

Babcock & Wilcox Reviewed By: Mechanical Engineering Branch, AEC Directorate of Licensing November 1972

SUMMARY

OF TOPICAL REPORT:

Control rod drive nac:.anism tests were carried out under operating coolant flow, :enpc:ature, pressure and water chemistry conditions and varying the equipment alignment from optimum to the maxinun amoun: of misalignment expec ci uith the most adverse combination of design tol-crances.

In addi: ion, a test was comple:cd to confirn the mo:or's ability to provide fcr forced insertion in the event of a stuck rod.

Life testing was carriad cut under the misaliganent conditions cnd duplicating the stroke, ::avel and reactor trips expected during 20 years of service life. Trip times, deacceleration ra:es and component wear ware =casured in conjune: ion with the life tests, and insertion force was casured under the stuck rod cendi: ions. All test results were judged to comply with :he performance cri:cria specified and were considered satisfactory.

SUMMARY

OF RECUI.ATORY EVALUATION:

We have revicued the subjec-repor:s and find that the three specific versions of a basic roller na: drive =cchanism designated "A",

"3" and "C" by 3 & W cxhibi: satisfac:ory trip, wear, accelera: ion, and forced insertion characteristics in operation.

However, the reports are considered acceptabic only if the provisions sta cd below in the regu-latory posicion are satisfied.

Pressure boundary design criter a and stress limits except for the 03E and D3E under various operating conditions are not presented for the type "A" =cchanism.

Zero period ground accelerations of 0.25 g

~

horizontal and 0.3 g vertical equivalent static acceleraticas were used for scisnic analysis.

Type "C" components are designed and

=anufactured :o the Class A vessel requirencnts of Section III.

How-ever, specific stress limits for emergency and faulted operating conditions, and the seismic design input loading:are not specified.

The design criteria used for the design of type "3" =cchanisms which are hybridi:cd vers:en of types "A" and "C" =cchanisms are also not described.

TCPICAL RI? ORT EVALUAT:CN REGULATORY POS!TICM:

The subjec: reports provide a satisfae: cry basis for accepting the operating performance of 3 & '4 control rod drive mechenisms Type "A",

"3",

or "C" and ray be referenced in future case applications provided that:

(a) the purpose of reference is limited :o caly techanis:

operating charac:cris:ics and (b) the analytical methods, cri:cria and stress li=i:s used in the design of :he nechanisms and (c). life tes:ing or equivalen procedures are used to confirn service life beyond the 20 years demons::ated by the tes: program are submit:ed.

Itens (a), (b) and (c) =ust be evalus:cd on a case-by-case basis.
