u V.AR 0 P 1981 MEMORANDUM FOR:

Thomas M. Novak, Assistant Director for Operating Reactors Division of Licensing FRO.'1:

SUBJECT:

ftAINE YANKEE:

SAFETY EVALUATION OF THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF SAFETY-RELATED EQUIPMENT / SYSTEMS TO FLOODING FR0f t FAILURE OF NON-CATEGURY l (SEISMIC) SYSTEMS (TAC 06580)

In response to TAC 00580, enclosed is the Operating Reactors Assessment Branch's Safety Evaluation Report for the Maine Yankee, Susceptibilit:

of Safety-Related Equipment / Systems to Flooding from Failure of Non-Category 1 (Seismic) Systems.

We conclude that the licensee has demonstrated in their analysis that the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Station, excluding the Turbine Building, has the capacity and capability to nanage and mitigate any single accident, such as flooding from a non-Class 1 system component or pipe, so that flooding will not prevent the safe shutdown of the plant and, is therefore, acceptabl e.

The licensee has further shown in the analysis for those areas addressed, that no single f. ilure would result in comon mode failure of redundant safety-related e.,uipnent.

We recomend thit the licensee be required within 90-days of receipt of this letter to submit its analysis of flooding of safety-related equip-ment in the Turbine Building resulting from failure of the circulating water piping or expansion joint in this area.

The receipt of this analysis is required to enable us to complete the evaluation for flooding of safety-related equipment / systems at the Mainc Yankee Atomic Fower Station.
