SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC COMPANY 2019 FUEL PERFORMANCE UPDATE MEETING (EPID: L-2019-LRO-0046)

On July 23-25, 2019, Westinghouse Electric Company (Westinghouse) held 2019 Westinghouse Fuel Performance Update Meeting at the Westinghouse Headquarters in Cranberry Township, PA. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff from the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (in person and via phone) and the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (via phone) was in attendance. Westinghouse presented proprietary information regarding Westinghouse fuel performance and future plans. Westinghouse provided updates on pressurized-water reactor fuel performance and methods (Westinghouse thermal design procedure, improved NEXUS cross-section representation methodology, qualification of the two-dimensional PARAGON2 transport code, reactivity insertion accident), boiling-water reactor (BWR) fuel performance and methods (debris leaker elimination initiative, TRITON11TM fuel development, BWR channel performance, control rod blade update), accident tolerant fuel program (EnCore fuel program, ADOPTTM fuel, chromium-coated cladding, advanced pellets, SiC cladding, in-rod sensors, multi-scale modeling, licensing), high burnup/high enrichment activities (burnup extension program and high burnup /high enrichment pilot plant initiative).

Additional topics of discussion were additive manufacturing, AP1000 plant startup physics test, and topical reports. By letter dated July 17, 2019, Westinghouse submitted presentation slides (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession (ADAMS) Accession No. ML19200A058).
