teclosed for your information is a draf t cepy of the subject report prepared as part of the ef fort of the Offici of Maclear Regulatory e
l' tesearch to determine research seeds in this area. The author is l
Dr. David C. Williams of Sandia Laboratorisa, and the paper will be presented at the AHS-ENS " International Meeting of Fast teactor Safety e
and Related Thysics" at Chicago in October. This evalastion is relevant to the DFM-supported experiments at Purdue University on the validity of the Board-Ball model, and is the IES generated evaluation of this model referred to in the reference memorandus.
The Villimma report concludes that the Board-Ball model for propagation of a detonation-like thermal explosion in a postulated pre-sized UOy sodiu:n systen is not valid for LMFBR accident conditions because of J.
the very high magnitude of the shock pressure required for triggering.
because of deficiencies in the fragmentation model, and because of neglect of the dispersive characteristics of the pre-sized UO.,-rodium system. The report does say, however, that the possibility of the occurrence and propagstion of a detonation-like thermal explosion in a pre-sized UO.,-sodium system by some mechanis:n other than the Board-Hall fragmentation model cannot at present be ruled out cou:pletely.
