Subject:

Byron Station Units 1 and 2 Braidwood Station Units 1 and 2 Supplemental Response to IE Bulletin 79-09, " Failures of GE Type AK-2 Circuit Breaker in Safety-Related Systems" NRC Docket Nos. 50-454/455 and 50-456/457 Reference (a) :

C.

Reed letter to J. G. Keppler dated June 18, 1979

Dear Mr. Keppler:

In response to the subject bulletin, Commonwealth Edison committed to the development of a preventive maintenance program Type AK-2 circuit breakers (See Reference (a) for Byron and Braidwood Stations).

At the time those commitments ~were made it was assumed that sufficient information relative to these breakers would be available to allow for the maintenance program development; i.e.

GE Circuit Breaker Instruction Manuals.

Although we now have the required information, we will be unable to complete the develop-ment and approval of the program by the date committed.

This program as indicated in IE Bulletin 79-09, is intended to assure the performance of the subject breakers during plant operation.

Therefore, we remain committed to the imple-mentation of the maintenance program before fuel loading on the subject units.

We expect to have completed the development and approval of the program in the first quarter of 1980.

This change has been reviewed with Mr.

E. Schwienbinz of your staff.

If you have any questions in this regard, please direct them to this office.

755 342 Very truly yours, h
