Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
The following is a writ *en report concerning a significant deficiency as reportable under 10CFR50.55(e).
On November 5, 1979, H, Radin and R. Whorton of SCE&G notified Mr. Jack Skolds (NRC-Region II Resident Inspector) of a significant deficiency as reportable under 10CFR50.55(e) concerning a design error with a portion of the anchorage at two (2) of the frames (openings PA-101 and PA-301) of the Sonicbar pressure-resistant and watertight door units.
These two (2) door frame anchorages were specifically aesigned for and supplied to the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station. Sonicbar, a division of Rysden Products Company, supplied these components and have also submitted a report of this occurrence to NRC Region III by their letter dated November 12, 1979.
The door frame at opening PA-101 requires four (4) additional concrete anchor bolts; however, this door and frame would not have failed under design conditions had the situation gone uncorrected. Therefore, this design error is not considered as a significant deficiency. For the door frame at opening PA-301, additional concrete anchor bolts and frame stiffening members are required due to the design load being unequally distributed. Sonicbar has evaluated this condition and determined that the frame could have failed with-out loss of any members under design loadings had the condition gone uncorrected.
For this potential failure, there could be c high temperature excursion into the auRiliary building which could result in damage to safety class equipment.
The subsequent failure of safety class equipment could impair the safe shutdown of the reactor.

Gas Company by Sonicbar per their letter dated October 25, 1979.
As previously identified, only two (2) of the door frames designed and supplied by Sonicbar contained a defect.
These door frames have a specific design for each application; therefore, this issue is not considered generic to the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station nor to any other facilities using these components.
The door frames identified have not yet been installed. Design modifications will be provided by Sonicbar and the door frames will be properly installed to meet their design loading. It is anticipated that these door frames will be installed by January 1, 1980.
Based on this status, SC &G gonsiders this report a final report for this item.
