Bressler posed some technical questions conce.rning the possible dumping of water containing low-level radioactive waste into the Susquehanna River from the Three Mile Island nuclear site.

As I have not yet received any further information since your May 17 lettar, I would appreciate receiving a response as soon as possible.

Dear Mr. Fammarer I have been contacted by'my. constituent,.Mr.. Robert.Bressler,.

who has posed some technical. questions concerning.the pos-sible dumping of water containing low-level radioactive waste...

into the Susquehanna River from the.Three Mile Island nuclear.

site.

I believe that the. technical experts.at the NRC are best quelified to answer.the.following questions:.

1.

Why must the water be. removed.at all?

2.

Is fission still occurring in the water containing radioactive waste.and is the amount.ot waste _.

water, therefore, continuing.to increase?

If the amount of water in nt2t increasing, can the _ level.

of the waste water be. considered. stable?,..

3.

That other options have been considered?

Specifically, has the option.of. storing.the. waste..

water in stainless stehl. tanks or pumping..it.....

into the containmant. facility at.Three Mile.

Island Number 1 been. considered?

4.

How do NRC experts know that they are conducting tests for the right isotopes...Are all radioactive..

isotopes being tested for.and especially are tents being conducted for plutonium contanination?

1.

What isotopes are being taken out of.the water and what prodedure is being employed to remove them?

6.

What kind of continuing monitoring device or procedures will be installed to ensure.that any, water put into the Sqsquehanna is. safe?
