Dear Mr. Johnson:
I have enclosed a copy of the signed Addendum to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commissions Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (NRC/RES) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on Cooperative Nuclear Safety Research related to long-term operations (LTO). The 2014 Addendum, which was specified to remain in force for a period of 5 years, will expire on August 22, 2019.
This MOU and the 2014 Addendum were developed through collaboration between the staff of NRC/RES and your DOE/NE staff. Our two organizations have worked well together over many years, and I believe the cooperation has been mutually beneficial. We look forward to many more successful years for this partnership. As I noted in my letter to you in April of this year, the NRC proposes to work toward renewing the MOU and, in the meantime, requests to extend the effective period of the current MOU Addendum by 1 year.
Please indicate your approval to extend the effective date of the current agreement by signing the enclosed new MOU Addendum at your earliest convenience. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Carol Moyer of my staff at 301-415-2153.
