. SUBJECT : THREE MILE ISLAND NUCLEAR STATION UNITS 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-289 AND 50-320 STEAM GENEPJJOR WELD RECORDS
Dear Mr. Kruesi:
You were notified on January 12, 1973 of a ~ situation which could be conside?ed reportable under 10 CFR 55 (e)(1)(1), " Conditions of Construction Per=its".
This situation involved incomplete documentation in the weld filler material records for Three Mile Island Units 1 and 2 steam generators.
C0RRECTIVE ACTION A report entitled " Investigation of Steam Generator Weld Records" 3AW-1402, was submitted to the Atomic Energy Commissica by The Babcock &
Wilcox Company during a meeting on this subject at 3ethesda, Maryland on January 30, 1973.
A review of the B&W report will reveal thar there are incomplete weld records on seven lots of electrodes used for Three > Ele Island Units 1 and 2 steam generators.
Five of these lots were used on Three Mile Island Unit 1 steam generators and three were used on Taree Mile Island Unit 2 steam generators (one lot was used on both Three 1 Ele Island U.its 1 and 2 steam generators).
The B&W report provides the data necessary to justify the use of these certain lots of weld filler metal which had incomplete documentacion of mechanical properties.
It is shown that the use of this material in steam.
generator fabrication does not affect plant safety.
A copy of BAW-1402 is attached for your information.
