Mr. Harold L. Price Director of Regulations U. S. Atomic Energy Cormnission Washington, D. C. 20545

Dear Mr. Price:

In accordance with your request, we are forwarding 10 copies of our report on the seismicity of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and vicinity. The Coast and Geodetic Survey has reviewed and evaluated the infor-mation on the seismic activity of the area as pre-sented by the Metropolitan Edison Company in their

" Preliminary Safety Analysis Report" and we are now submitting our conclusions on the seismicity factors.

If we may be of further assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely yours, h .

e REPORT ON THE SITE SEISMICITY FOR THE THREE MILE

~

ISLAND NUCLEAR STATION NEAR MIDDIETON, PENNSYLVANIA At the request of the Division of Reactor Licensing of the Atomic Energy Commission, the Seismology Division of the Coast and Geodetic Survey has evaluated the seismicity of the area around the proposed reactor site on Three Mile Island, Londonderry Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania ,

and has reviewed the similar analysis made by the applicant in the " Preliminary Safety Analysis Report" of the Metropol-itan Edison Company. The applicant's report of the seismic-ity of the area is comprehensive and satisfactory for eval-uating the seismicity factor of the site.

Based upon the review of the seismic history of the site and the surrounding area and the related geologic con-siderations, the Coast and Geodetic Survey agree with the applicant that an acceleration of 0.06 g would be adequate for representing earthquake disturbances likely to occur within the lifetime of the facility. In addition, we agree that an acceleration of 0.12 g would represent the ground motion from the maximum earthquake likely to affect the site.
