Docket No. 50-289 Operating License No. DPR-50 Decay Heat Pumps Your letter of December 2,1977, granted approval of a mcdified program for vibration testing and ultrasonic inspection of the currently installed decay heat pump shafts that we had requested in our letter of October 27, 1977, Gol 1477, subject to your revision / clarification.
This letter is to inform you that DH-P1A vas run in excess of one hour at great'er than 550 gpm in a manner not quite censistent with that permitted in your letter of December 2, 1977 The DH-P1A chronclogy of testing events was as follows:

February 10, 1978 P. W. REID GQL 0198 Althctgh DH-P1A was restarted after having accumulated in excess of one hour of operation at greater than 550 gym, it was done in order to attain the objectives of the run, i.e., verifying acceptable operation of the pump.
S'_nce particular pump ISI tests require bearing temperatures, the pumps have to be run longer to obtain the bearing temperatures than for taking just vibration data.
In view of this requirement, Met-Ed is requesting that the greater than 550 gym accumulated run time be increasef to three hours in Order to prevent a recurrence of the above situation. Furthert.e, this increased accumulated run time shculd facilitate the monthly ISI testing between the quarterly Vibration /Ultrasenic testing.
