cCI 1619 Ny g}2 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation ATTN: R. W. Reid, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. k U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Consission Washington, D.C. 20555
Dear Sir:
Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Unit 1 (TMI-1) Decket No. 50-289 Operating License No. DPR-50 Decay Heat Pump Shafts In accordance with Metropolitan Edisen Company letter of September 8,1977, GQL 1234, Paragraph 1.A. Vibration Testing, and in reference to a telecen en November 16, 1977, between your Mr. G. 3. Zwetzig and our Mr. R. J. Stevens, attached is the November vibration testing data for DH-P-1A and DH-P-13. DH-P-1A Met-Ed Generaticn Engineering has reviewed the November 3, 1977, vibraticn testing data for DE-P-1A and has noted that the 900 cpm data for locations AV and BH, the 1800 cpm data for all locations, and the 3600 cpm data fcr locatiens AV, BV and 3H exceed the October h,1977, baseline by more than 50%. However, based on the IED Vibraticn Severity Chart, the November 3 readings are indicative of a " good" running pump. A ecmparisen of the DH-P-1A vibration amplitudes has also been made to the criteria establisned in Section XI of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vescel Code. There has been no change in the composite vibration levels of DH-P-1A, which vculd, according to code requirements, warrant any ccrrective action or increased frequency of testing. DH-P-13 Met-Ed Generatien Engineering has reviewed the November 1,1977, vibraticn testing data for DH-P-13 and has noted that the 900 cpm data for 1ccaticn AV, the 1800 cpm data fcr 1ccations BH and AV, and the 18000 cpm data for lccations AH and AV exceed the September 30, 1977, baseline by ::.cre than 50%. Ecvever, these values are less than these recorded on September 5, and acccrding o the IED Vibration Severity Chart, the Ncvember 1 readings are indicativu of a "smcoth" to "gccd" running pump. e y e
R. W. Reid, Chief :Tovenber 22, 1977 GQL 1619 It should be noted that changes in a=plitude of 50% or more are insignificant, when ecmpared to the extremely lov baseline values, and that such changes can be expected. Based on the above, Met-Ed Generation Engineering has concluded that since the vibraticn levels of DH-P-1A and DH-P-13 are so low, no corrective acticn is required. Sincerely, J. G. Herbein Vice President JGH:RJS:gs Attachments 1492 233
