Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Unit 1 (TMI-1)

Docket No. 50-280 Operating License No. DPR-50 Decay Heat Dump Shafts Metropolitan Edison Cc=pany letter GQL 1h77, October 27, 1977, stated that a torsional vibration analysis would be performed to provide further assurance that torsional critical speeds are not a problem with respect to imposing significant torsional loads on the shafts.

Werthington Corporation has performed a torsional critical speed analysis, which we received en December 8, 1977. As a result of their analysis, Werthington Corporatien has stated.nat since the torsional critical speed is apprcximately three times the rotative speed, torsional excitation is not a problem with these pumps. Met-Ed has reviewed the detailed analysis and concurs with Worthingten that torsional excitation is not a problem.
