Dear Sir:

During August of last year cur Three Mile Island Nuclear Station (DE) was visited by a group from the Johns Ecpkins University Applied Physics Labo rato rt.

After touring the sita, these gentlemen ec= piled a report en the potential fire hazards which they had seen.

Unfortunately, this group did not visit the cperating unit at the DE site (DE-1), but instead visited the unit which is currently under construction at the same site (DE-2).

The individuala to whcm the members of the Jchns Ecpkins grcup spcke were not Met-Ed employees, but were, instead, construction workers, who vere not familiar with cur Fire Brigade, fire equipment or with the unit design.

As a result, the report (dated 12/9/76) which was filed by the Johns Hopkins group, and placed in the P2blic Document Eccm by the ACES, is based cn sc=e miseencepticns concerning the quality cf the fire prevention and control methods and equipment which are available at DE.

'de have attempted to minimice the fire hacard at our Nuclear Station and are concerned that a report which has been based on scte serious misconceptiens should appear in the public record.

In an effort to set the record straight, we invite the gentlemen from Johns Hopkins te return to cur Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, where they can cbserve the operaticn of DE-1.

It is cur opinien that the Jchns Hcpkins group vill find the conditions at our operating 1488 340

It should be realized, that because TMI-2 is still under const ruction, all of the fire prevention and containment equipment nay not yet have been installei.

This visit by the Jchns Ecpkins group can be arranged through my office.

It is my sincere belief that through this type of continued cooperation, we can verk with the gentlemen frc= Jchns Hopkins to present a more cceplete understanding of the fire control methods which are available at IMI to the public.

Sincerely,
