Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Unit 1 (TMI-1)
~~ '< s Operating License No. DPR-50 Docket No. 50-289 Decay Heat Pumps Mr. G. 3. Zvetzig of your office has indicated that the NRC requests Metropolitan Edison Cc=pany's position with respect to the TMI-l Decay Heat Pumps. Met-Ed has, through extensive investigation and ongoing pump testing, verified the re-liability of the TMI-l installed shafts. However, in order to delete the requirement for quarterly vibration and ultrasonic testing of the installed shafts per our September-8,1977 ccccitment, Met-Ed has scheduled shaft re-placement for the forthecming refueling outage. Should conditions evolve the nake shaft replacement impracticable during the cutage, Met-Ed vill continue the quarterly vibration and ultrasonic testing until such time shaft replace-ment is practicable.
