Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

In response to the reference a special audit of the Lynchburg Research Center was conducted. The purpose of the audit was to determine the status of the center's Shipping and Receiving operations as they relate to the transfer, packaging and transport of low-level radioactive waste.

The following items were identified during the audit as those requiring corrective action to comply fully with each item in the reference and a schedule for completion of the corrective action:

1.

Area Operating Procedures require revision to specify the positions responsible for transferring and transporting each type of low-level radiocctive waste. To be completed by November 15, 1979.

2.

Area Operating Procedures require revision to specify the responsibility for packaging low-level radioactive waste.

To be completed by November 15, 1979.

3.

Area Operating Procedures require revision to address acceptable chemical forms of low-level radioactive waste.

To be completed by November 15, 1979.

4.

The two training programs for authorized users of radio-active material must contain more detailed information on the transfer, packaging and transport of low-level radioactive waste. The programs are to.be revised prior to the next presentation.

The reports of management-controlled audits must be more specific as to the components of the low-level radioactive waste program that was audited. To be in the October audit reports.

The three items of additional information requested in item number 9 of the reference are presented below:

1.

Six shipments of low-level radioactive waste were made during the eighteen months ending June 30, 1979. The total volume of waste in these six shipments was 1229.02 cubic feet.

2.

Below is listed the quantities (curies) of the major iso-toped shipped in the form of low-level radioactive waste during the eighteen months ending June 30, 1979.
