IN RESPONSE REFER Washington, DC 20036 TO F0IA 79-363

Dear Mr. Burnham:

This is in response to your letter of August 30, 1979 in which you requested, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, all unclassified documents relating to malfunctions of nuclear reactors outside of the U.S. within the past five years.

~

Listed on Appendix A are documents subject to your request. Copies of these documents, with the exception of document 2 which is in French and document 3 which is in German, are enclosed. Copies of these documents are also being placed in the NRC Public Document Room,1717 H Street, N.W., Washington, DC.

If you wish copies of documents 2 and 3, please inform us. One other document subject to your request is still undergoing review, and we will advise you as soon as a determination is made.

The documents listed on Appendix A were identified on the bases of the recollections of the staff of the Office of International Programs and a review of the log maintained by that Office concerning information received from foreign sources. Since documents are filed by country rather than by subject within the Office of International Programs, it is possible that some i

information relating to malfunctions of nuclear reactors may have been overlooked.

However, to conduct a complete review of all files,it would take an estimated two man weeks of effort.

If you wish, the staff of the Office of International Programs will be pleased to meet with you if /ou have any questions.

If you would like us to arrange a meeting, please telephone Jacob H. Zamansky of my staff on 492-8133.

Sincer y,

gh J. M. Felton, Director Division of hies and Records Office of Administration
