Mr. Charles E. MacDonald, Chief September 20, 1979 Transportation Branch Division of Fuel Cycle and Material Safety U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C.

20555 Dear Mr. MacDorald; In response to your September 14, 1979 correspondence to us, I have attached a copy of the Radioactive Materials Qual 2.ty Assurance Program of The Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation which was implemented on January 1, 1979, for our licenses (20-05600-02/03) in accordance with requirements of 1CCFR Part 71, Appendix E.

A copy of this program was submitted to the Director, Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards, USNRC, in late December 1978. Since I received no request for additional information, I believed the program L

to be satisfactory. The program has been added to our Corporate Radiological Safety Manual and is currently being implerented at various radiography jobsites.

i Since our industrial radiography program requires the return of used Iridium 192 sources to the manufacturer for disposal, it is imperative that we be allowed to deliver our licensed =aterial to a carrier for transport back to the manufacturer after it has decayed down to an unusable strength.

Consequently, it is requested that you review our Radioactive Material Quality Assurance Program a. d authori::e us

,o deliver licensed material to a carrier as soon as possible.

If you require additional information please call me at (617) 973-8658.

Very truly yours, Yfshb -
