STATUS REPORT AS OF AUGUST 31, 1979 As we have informed the Board in previous status reports, a committee of the National Academy of Sciences is performing a study of the overall energy situation in Puerto Rico for the Office of Energy of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and a portion of such study is being prepared by an Electric Power Systems Subcommittee.

Although it was previously expected that the Subcommittee would finalize its recommendations in late May, the work of the Subcommittee extended for a lengthier period. Thus, the Subcommittee's report is presently being finalized and will be received by the Authority shortly. Accordingly, the Authority has not yet been able to take the results of such study into account in its internal review of generation expansion. We expect to be able to inform the Board with respect to our conclusions in the next status report.

In specific connection with the Islote site, the Authority was pleased to note that the Site Safety Evaluation Report issued by the NRC Staff on April 27, 1979 reached the basic conclusions "that the Islote site.is acceptable under the guidelines of 10 C.F.R. Part 100 for the construction and operation of a nuclear power plant of the general type and size being proposed."
