NSD NORTHERN STATES POWER COMPANY PRAIRIE ISLAND NL' CLEAR GENERATING PLANT Rit #2 Welch, MN 35089 October 3, 1979 Mr. Ja:aes G. Keppler, Director Region III Office of Inspection & Enforcement U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 Attention: R. F. Warnick Reportable Occurrence No. 79-27 At about 1414 hours0.0164 days
0.393 hours
0.00234 weeks
5.38027e-4 months
, with Unit 1 at 100% power, high radiation alarms were received on the air ejector discharge monitor and the steam generator blowdown monitor, indicating stea... generator tube leakage.
At about 1424 hours0.0165 days
0.396 hours
0.00235 weeks
5.41832e-4 months
the reactor tripped on low pressurizer pressure followed immediately by safety injection and containment isolation.
All safeguards equipment functioned as required. The recovery procedure for steam generator tube rupture was followed. Release of gaseous radioactivity amounted to less than 10% of Tech Spec hourly average maximum release rate limits.
Cooldown was begun immediately and the unit is now in cold shutdown.
The failed tube (or tubes) will be plugged and tube inspection will be done in accordance with Tech Spec 4.12.
