Special Report on the Fire Protection Water System File: A-ll8a

Dear Mr. Keppler:

This special report is suamitted in accordance with the requirements of DAEC Technical Specifications Appendix A, paragraph 3.13.B.2. The following describes the problem encountered and the corrective actions taken to restore the fire suppression water system to its' full capability.

Problem On July 20, 1979 the electric motor driven fire pump,1P-48, was de-clared inoperable due to excessive water leakage around the pump shaft sleeve.

The diesel driven fire pump (lP-49) was operable as required by technical speci'ications. The electric motor driven fire pump was disassembled for inspection and it was determined a general pump overhcul would be required.

Corrective Action The pump main shaft, bowl bolts, wear rings, shaft sleeve, bearings and bearing retainers were replaced. The pump was reassembled and functionally tested on August 24, ')79 with satisfactory results, thus restoring fire protection water system fire pump redundancy. No further corrective action is planned.
