I apologize for not providing this response to your request on behalf of h
Mr. Jonn navagio sooner but, as you are aware, the Commission and staff 5
have been occupied with continued support of the efforts at Three Mile h.
Islano, orders to other facilities, appearances before the president's E
Comission and various committees of Congress that are investigating the Tnree itile Island accident, and the realignment of our own resources and

priorities to give imediate attention to the proolems resulting from E
tne accident.

We have taken or are taking a number of actions with respect to all nuclear if power plants as a result of the Three Mile Island accident.
Specificially, s
full-time inspectors have been assigned to each operating plant utilizing
[
aabcock u Wilcox pressurized water reactors like those at Three Mile Island.
O In addition, the licensees of all these plants which were not already shut Il down have voluntarily shut down their plants. We have issued confirmatory h.
orders to the licensees of all Baucock & Wilcox reactors like those at Three E
Mile Island to assure that necessary plant modifications, additional training y~
and revised operating procedures will be affected prior to resu:ning operation.
Licensees of all operating plants utilizing pressurized water reactors have E
been instructed to take specific actions with regard to the status of certain E..
equipaent, plant n'ccedures, operator ac' ions and facility designs.
Licensees-E of all operating plants, including those atilizing br ' ling water reactors, E
nave ceen instructed to provide us witn additional information with regard to J
their facilities in lignt of the Three Mile Island accident.
In addition, substantial effort is being expended within this agency to evaluate the factors L
which contributed to the Three Mile Island accident and to prevent a similar l
occurrence in the future.

';e will carefully review all the information obtained and developed as a result 5
of the Three itile Island accident and take whatever further action as dcemed E
appropriate.

'iith respect to alternative methods of energy production such as solar, wind, I
and geothemal, the Department of Energy is the Federal Agency responsible for E
tneir researcn and development. Our consideration of alternative methods of
[E energy production is limited to the assessment of the environmental impact of E-
