AND INSULAR AFFAIRU Jpouse of Representatibes Wagnaten, B.C. 20515 May 14, 1979 The Honorable Joseph M. Hendrie Chairman Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.
20555
Dear Mr. Chairman:
I've recently been told that Metropolitan Edison, the opera-tor of the Three Mile Island nuclear facility, is planning to dump over 600,000 gallons of contaminated water into thq Susque-hanna River.
It is my understanding that the measured radioactivity of the water to be dumped is of such low levels that this proposed action meets all existing Federal and state standards.
This action would affect not only those who depend on the Susquehanna for drink-ing water but also everyone who has an interest, economic or other-wise, in the Chesapeake Bay.
The seafood industry derived from the Bay is an integral element in Maryland's economy.
Regardless of whether the contaminated water meets current safety standards, I am requesting that you disapprove any such plan to dispose of it in the Susquehanna.
My constituents and the public at large have had an impossible job over the past several weeks sorting through the information, misinformation and technical jargon which has resulted from the Three Mile incident.
At a time when reasoned and r,ational discourse is most needed, the approval by the NRC of this proposal would be counterproductive.
I look forward to hearing from you on this matter. Thank you for your attention, and please let me know if you have any questions.
Faithfully yours, ROBERT E. BAUMAN Member of Congress REB:dar 7909280166 1052 092
